Chapter 11. An in-depth look at Vision control around Dragon and Baron
Vision control around Dragon
So let’s take a look at what your vision control around Dragon should look like.
Now remember, the idea is that you place your wards in advance, i.e. about 30-60 seconds before the Dragon is about to spawn/be contested. This will allow you to gather a lot of information from your surroundings, which will increase your chances of securing it.
Mind you, when you see the warding spots below, please don’t assume that wards should be distributed only by certain roles. Everyone should use their trinkets and carry one pink ward before an objective is about to be contested.
In case you haven’t read the previous chapter and you’ve skipped over to this one – please go back and read it now. In the part where I write about Dragon as an objective, I explain the 4 different situations in which you should go for it.
It’s a must that you know the information there.
Back to vision control around Dragon. First, we will look at the best warding spots for the Blue side.
Note that the warding spots numbered in Green (1-3) are suitable for your Trinket Wards, while the spot numbered in Pink (4) is appropriate for placing pink wards.
You should have all 4 locations covered about 60 seconds before you expect the Dragon to spawn or be contested.
Locations from 1-3 are three very effective spots that cover all 3 paths in which the enemy is supposed to approach you from, when you play on the Blue side. When placed there, they will give you the necessary vision to be aware of when your opponents are coming and what the situation is.
The 4th spot is where you want to place a pink ward, so you can clear any stealth wards that the enemy might have put right around that area. Keep in mind that vision control also includes sweeping with Red Trinkets the area where you suspect the enemy to have wards in, so they lose vision of the Dragon Pit.
Now let’s take a look at the proper warding spots for the Red side of the map. Again, the warding spots numbered in Green (1-3) are suitable for your Trinket Wards, while the spot numbered in Pink (4) is appropriate for placing pink wards.
The first 3 spots are very solid, because they give you vision not only over the two areas in which the enemy team is most likely to come from, but they help you pre-empt any Dragon steal attempt they might try over the wall.
They provide a really strong coverage, while the 4th ward should be a placed to clear any wards they have inside/right outside the Dragon Pit.
Obviously, no matter which part of the map you are playing from, you have to try and secure the Scuttle Crab as soon as you get the into the area. The vision and the movement speed buff it gives might turn out to be very valuable in helping you get the Dragon.
Vision control around Baron
Baron’s part of the map is pretty much a reverse copy of the Dragon area. Therefore, the ward placement should be similar. The only difference is that since Baron is an even more important objective, placing deeper wards into the enemy Jungle is desirable.
Here is what this should look like in practice for the Blue side:
Similarly to the previous part of this chapter, the warding spots numbered in Green (1-5) are suitable for your Trinket Wards, while the spot numbered in Pink (6, 7) are appropriate for placing pink wards.
Obviously, if you are playing from behind, you will have a much harder time placing wards in the 1st and 2nd warding spots, as well as the pink ward on the 6th spot. However, these wards give you tremendous amount of information about when the enemies are approaching the Baron area and will help you plan your actions accordingly.
The rest of the wards give you enough vision so you can pre-empt any attempt for a steal from the enemy Jungler.
Let’s take a look at the proper warding when you play on the Red side.
Similarly to the previous picture, the 2nd and 3rd warding spots give out a tremendous amount of information, but they would be really hard to place if you are behind as a team.
The rest of the spots will give you the most optimal vision coverage you can have from the Red side, with that amount of wards placed.
Regardless of which side of the map you are playing on, you need to sweep out any area where you think there might be an enemy stealth ward placed. Also, securing the Scuttle Crab is just as important as it is for Dragon, due to the massive movement speed buff which can serve as an engage/disengage tool.
