Runes and Masteries

Season 7 Runes and Masteries for Mid laners

First, I want to make the distinction that you don’t have to follow these Runes and Masteries exactly for every single matchup, if you don’t want to. Please be flexible and feel free to adapt them to your personal preference and playstyle.

The reason why I have presented them in this way is because a lot of my readers told me that they would get much more value out of me listing the individual Runes and Masteries for the most popular Mid laners, as opposed to listing generic ones.

So, I respected their wishes.

And you’ll also notice that I’ve preferred to not use images to illustrate them. This is because for some reason the Masteries don’t print out well in the paperback version, so I’ve written them down for you. It’s easier to reference that way, anyway.

If your champion is not covered, you should just apply the Runes/Masteries tendencies that you are seeing below and you will have the exact idea of what to use.

Choosing the right Summoner spells

For your first Summoner spell slot, you should always choose Flash, no exceptions. It doesn’t matter if you are playing an assassin or an AP carry – you need it to reposition yourself in lane and teamfights in order to be effective.

You have several other options for your second Summoner spell, depending on what your champion will benefit the most from.

Ghost – After the buff Ghost received, it has become a really dominant spell in the Mid lane. Its value lies in that it gives its bearer extra mobility during teamfights, which is extremely beneficial to champions like Twisted Fate, Cassiopeia and Ryze.

Ignite – You should take Ignite if you need the kill pressure that it provides. It’s a must if you are playing an assassin, because it makes your job easier. It is also a really good choice if you suspect that the enemy Mid laner will have Heal as his other Summoner spell.

Teleport – Teleport is another great alternative and it should be your choice in a lot of your games. It helps prevent from falling behind in lane by giving you the option to TP back to lane after dying/getting forced to recall. It also provides the most map pressure all throughout the game, but you don’t have as much kill potential as you would have with Ignite.

Exhaust – If you are playing against an assassin such as Zed and Talon, who can burst you in a matter of a few seconds, it’s always best to bring Exhaust in lane. This Summoner spell is made to counter assassins and long as you use it properly, it will nullify their ability to burst you down.

Heal – Heal is another option you have if you need more security during the laning phase and you dislike having Exhaust. Heal is very powerful in 2vs2 scenarios, since the healing and movement speed bonus that both you and your Jungler will get can mean the difference between losing or winning that 2vs2.

Barrier – This is another anti-assassin spell, which unfortunately, does much less than Heal and Exhaust. Unless they considerably buff Barrier, I would not recommend that you pick it in any situation.

Cleanse – If both the enemy Jungler and your Mid lane opponent have hard crowd control and you are not sure if you can deal with it, you can opt in for Cleanse as your second Summoner spell.

In other words, your choice for your second Summoner spell is really situation dependent and you should approach each game with the mentality of which Summoner spell will benefit you the most.
