Items appear in Mario Kart 8 much like the previous games. Several items have been removed & several ones have been added. Items can be used in an offensive & defensive manner. We’re going to teach you how you can use these items in both ways as well as what these items can do for you. Just remember that these items can be obtained in a random manner when you hit those item boxes.
A Banana is something that one can leave on the track as an obstacle. Any player that runs into it will slip & become temporarily disoriented. You can throw this in front of you, but it’s hard to make a direct hit. You can also just drop it from behind as an obstacle. One effective way is to use it as a shield from behind especially if an enemy uses an item on you as it shields you from it. You can easily avoid a Banana on the track if you see it of course.
When it comes to the Blooper, it can only be used at the front. It obscures the player’s vision as the screen is mostly covered in ink. Players that have memorized the track will not be hindered by the Blooper. One other thing is that the Blooper can’t be used as a defensive item as well.
The Bob-omb functions much like a Banana. You can drop it on the field where it becomes an obstacle. Any player that hits it will cause a big explosion knocking not only the person that hit it but as well as those that are near it. You can also use it as a shield from behind, but with its firepower, you would want to use it for trolling as you could also get hit by the explosion as well.
The Boomerang Flower is a bit like the Fire Flower, but it doesn’t have a time limit. When throwing the boomerang, it can hit a player & the boomerang will go back to the user. When the boomerang is coming back, it will hit another racer or the racer that was the actual target in a situation where it missed. There are three boomerangs that the players can use.
The Blue Shell moves like the Green & Red Shell but is pretty devastating. The player that throws it will hit the targets in front until it reaches the player in first place. The good thing for those on the receiving end is that they get a notification if a Blue Shell is coming. That way they can avoid it as they will be knocked down from it. The person on first will be blasted by a huge explosion. The Blue Shell usually pops up for the player in last place as it is very rare as well.
Bullet Bill is an item the same as the Star. The user gets a temporary boost in speed as well as invulnerability from different items & hazards. The downside to the Bullet Bill is that you can’t control your direction when you’re in Bullet Bill form. You do get faster the more players you pass by in the process. The duration for the Bullet Bill does vary that is why getting pass by a lot of players is ideal.
You basically have to get 10 Coins to get a boost of speed. When you get a Coin, make sure to use it right away so that you can get a different item later on. Make sure not to get hit as you can lose 3 Coins in the process. This item doesn’t have any offensive or defensive property so to speak.
The Crazy Eight is an item that grants you the use of eight items that will be encircling you. These items include a Banana, Blooper, Bob-omb, Coin, Green Shell, Mushroom, Red Shell & a Star). You need to know when to use the right item at the right time, but all of these items have the same functions as when they are used alone.
A Fire Flower functions pretty much the same as the ones in the other games. The player that has a Fire Flower can use it to launch fireballs that bounce off & hit other racers. Using it offensively is good & you can also fire it behind to hinder those that are chasing you. There is a timer when using the Fire Flower & the more you shoot makes the timer go down faster.
The Gold Mushroom runs on a timer & it will automatically be activated. You wouldn’t need to turn it on as the timer will go down but using it doesn’t drop the timer much faster. The Gold Mushroom is much like the Mushroom, but you can have an endless amount of boosts as long as the timer is still up. It doesn’t have a defensive property so just boost your way ahead, but this item is very rare to get.
A Green Shell can be used to knock down a racer. It can be thrown in front or behind depending on your situation. One can snipe using a Green Shell as it will only disappear once it hits a target. If it doesn’t hit then it continuously moves until it does. You can also use the Green Shell as a protective shield from behind. You can’t avoid a Green Shell so make sure you have a barrier item up for protection.
The Lightning is a very useful item as it hits all targets in front of you without missing. The item has the ability to disorient characters as well as shrink them. Shrunk characters can be flattened by other racers in the process. One other thing is that the higher your place is in the race means, the longer you are disoriented so use this strategically & it doesn’t have any defensive properties as well.
The Mushroom is an item that grants you some speed boost equal to that of a booster pad. It’s a useful item to get past through obstacles as well as useful for getting pass through tight spaces. You can also use the Mushroom to remove Blooper ink on you. You can also use the Mushroom as a shield from behind.
You basically have three Mushrooms circling you & you can use the same effects for three times as one boost consumes one Mushroom in the process.
The Piranha Plant is one item that can be used as a shield to the front of you. It can also be used at the back as a regular shield would. The other use is that if you press the button, the Plant will give you a small boost of speed. It also hits any target in the front of you as the range of it is great. The Piranha Plant does run on a timer & the more you use it makes the timer go down faster than it is.
The Red Shell is pretty much the same as the Green Shell when it comes to being used offensively & defensively. The difference is that the Red Shell homes to a target & will disappear if it doesn’t have anything to hit in the process. It’s pretty much the same as the Green Shell in all aspects.
The Star item grants the player a boost in speed as well as a moment of temporary invulnerability. This is ideal for going through shortcuts that have hazards to them. The Star also flips other racers that are hit by the player with the Star. It also destroys any item obstacles like Bob-ombs & Bananas on the field.
The Super Horn is a very powerful offensive & defensive item. When one gets the Super Horn they can use it to generate a large sound in an area. Racers caught in the area will be flipped & it destroys any incoming items to protect the user. All items will be destroyed in the process.
The Triple Banana is a bit different from the Banana. You don’t necessarily throw it on the field. It acts as a defensive barrier that you can use offensively & defensively. When it comes to defense the Triple Banana will automatically protect you from different items. When used in an offensive fashion, you can ram your vehicle on another player as long as the Triple Banana is still up.
Triple Green Shell
The efficacy of the Triple Green Shell is much like the Green Shell, but it is magnified three times. Players can use the Triple Shell as a shield & players can fire these Shells one at a time or at a relentless pace to take out numerous targets on the field as well as being fired in different directions. You can also ram an enemy with these Triple Green Shells.
Triple Red Shell
This functions pretty much like the Triple Green Shell in all aspects.
